5 riders and their steeds braved the chill winds for our first unofficial equestrian practice of the year. AEthelmearc’s current KEO, Alexander Caithnes, thumbed his knightly nose at the winter storm warnings and joined us for a day of chivalry, learning, and authorizations prep. Alli arrived with her whippets to add to the medieval flair. Mark had squirreled away his camera in his pocket, and snapped these shots perched atop Dolly’s mountainous back:
Armed and elegant! Rachel and Pete

Alexander expounds, Cricket cogitates, and Kirsten tries not to Freeze!

Worldview from a War Horse: Weapons rack through Dolly’s ears

Alexander gave us a generous grant towards procuring insurance for official SCA practices. Mark stepped forth to offer the balance. Many thanks to them for their knightly largesse!
Riders and their mounts:
Scott and Cassandra
Noel and Sioux
Rachel and Pierre Pointille
Mark and Dolly Madison
Kirsten and Red Sonja
As we move forward teaching Gracie to drive we are making use of the wealth of equestrian knowledge found on YouTube. This series of clips highlights harness fit and basic driving safety. It is very informative and very traditional.
Gunnarr and Banshee will be traveling down from Endless Hills to conduct authorizations for our local equestrians on Saturday, April 4. The bad weather back up date will be April 18.
This professionally produced video clip from last year’s Lysts at Castleton was just posted on YouTube. The riders are Sir Alexis la Bouche and Master Terafan Greydragon. The event is held in the Barony of Bryn Gwlad, Ansteorra. Enjoy!
We are thrilled to have 2 equestrian practices on the calendar so far.
On Feb 21 we will be holding an unofficial equestrian get together.
Alexander, Aethelmearc’s current KEO will be coming down as well as
Gunnar, the Equestrian Marshal for Siege.
On March 21 Gunnar will be coming down again along with Banshee and/or
his lady to authorize riders.
We will no doubt be locking in more dates as the season advances, and
encourage equestrians to participate in nearby Atlantian practices.
Practices will be held at Almost Heaven Horse Source in Leetown (Mark
and Kirsten’s family farm) and are weather dependent. We will post
details and directions closer to the date. There are a FEW horses
available to rent for intermediate and advanced riders. Please
contact me as soon as possible if you think you may want to ride.
Rules for the games, and many other resources are on the kingdom
equestrian site at http://frontpage.velocity.net/duane/ae-eqindex.htm.
Googling “sca equestrian” and suchlike will provide endless hours of
entertainment and inspiration. At some point I promise I’ll put all my
favorite historical horsey hangouts in one spot…
Wanna play but don’t want to ride? We can’t pull it off without our
wonderful groundcrew! Come to the practices and start becoming
familiar with our beloved steeds, the crazy things we do and ways you
can join in!
So, mark your calendars, read your rulebooks, and shoot me any
questions you may have.
With great delight I announce that there will be equestrian at the Steirbach Baronial Birthday the last weekend of August at the Clarke Co. Fairgrounds. That’s a hop skip and a jump away from us–huzzah!GREAT job, Alienor, for pulling this together. You rock!
Grace has spent the week hanging over the fence watching me work clients’ horses. “Am I next?” she seemed to ask continuously. Despite the bitter chill, Mark and I brought her out today for some quality family time.
While I was getting organized, Grace went over to check out the mounting block. She put her hoof on top. *Click!* Treat! Operant conditioning at it’s finest! Operant conditioning is when you build on a behavior that is freely offered.
“I may end up regretting that one day,” I joked to Mark, but I was already thinking about the bridge, or Pirate’s plank as we call it, he’d built recently for a training obstacle. This was going to shortcut the process. Clunk went the hoof on the block. Click. Treat. Clunk. Click. Treat.
I got my gear in order and put the surcingle on Grace for the first time.  She moved on and felt the band around her belly, much tighter than her blanket. She tossed her head and bucked once in protest, but responded to my request for more impulsion and soon forgot the annoying squeeze.
As she moved around the ring she swerved over to the mounting block. Clunk went the foot. “Now’s not the time Grace, move on!” As important as developing her curiosity and initiative is teaching her context: how to figure out when things are appropriate. Sometimes the block is a pedestal for her to stand on, sometimes a step for the rider to mount from, right now just ring clutter to be ignored.
Grace quickly made up for lost time. In short order she was ground driving for the first time, catching on quickly to voice commands and directional changes. We swapped back to a single longe and headed out of the roundpen to explore the challenge course in our open riding field.
Remember the hoof on the mounting block? Grace was initially intimidated by the Pirate’s plank sitting in the middle of the field. She sniffed -click! She touched it with her hoof-click! The lightbulb came on. She remembered this game! Before long she was walking that plank like an old salt-YARRR!
On the way back to the barn Grace learned to navigate raised cavaletti (no, you don’t step on it like the plank!) and jump a little crossrail. Nothing was ever an issue. Our attitude was let’s take a stroll… and oops! how did that get in the way?! Let’s figure it out!
Grace is fascinating to work with. She is so CEREBRAL. She needs to be continually questioned, challenged, engaged–and supported in those rare moments when she gets confused or scared. Clicker training adds motivation to her innate laziness, as well as shapes her natural curiosity.
Mark snapped some pictures with his cell phone before we wrapped up for the day.

I just learned about a highly nutritious grass that may be suit itself to a warming climate.
